Production and Processing Characteristics of Graphite Electrode

Ⅰ. The production of graphite electrodes

Significant research on professional graphite electrode materials is to use economic high-speed machine tools to process. The machine tool should have good stability, the three-axis motion should be uniform and stable without vibration, and the rotation accuracy of the spindle should be as good as possible at the same time.

Graphite block is a kind of artificial graphite, and synthetic graphite is made by artificial heating and other processes of this kind of product. Generally, if it is purified to make high-purity or carbon fiber, the added value is high.

Graphite electrodes are mainly made of petroleum coke and needle coke as raw materials, coal tar pitch as a binder. They are made through calcination, batching, kneading, pressing, roasting, graphitization, and machining. It releases electric energy in the form of an electric arc in an electric arc furnace. According to their quality indicators, the conductors that heat and melt the charge can be classified into ordinary power, high power and ultra-high power.

In high-temperature vacuum furnaces, graphite electrodes are frequently used as electric heating elements. The maximum operating temperature is 3000°C. At high temperatures, it is easily oxidized. It can only be used in neutral or reducing atmospheres, except vacuum.

It has a low thermal expansion coefficient, a high thermal conductivity of the carbon graphite electrode, a resistivity of (813)10-6 m, better processability than SiC and MoSi2 rods, high temperature resistance, extreme cold and extreme heat resistance, and a lower price.

The general machine tool can also process the working electrode on its own, but our understanding of writing the road differs from that of the copper electrode.

Ⅱ. The electrical discharge machining of the EDM graphite electrode

Because graphite has good electrical conductivity, it can save a lot of time in electrical discharge machining, which is one of the reasons why graphite is used as an electrode.

Ⅲ. The processing technology characteristics of graphite electrodes

Hard and brittle industrial graphite, when the tool is severely worn, the tool is usually recommended to use cemented carbide or diamond coating.

When the graphite roughing tool can directly cut up and down the finished product to avoid gaps and cracks, it is often used in the fast-travel mode.

In general, graphite electrodes rarely occur when the cutting depth of cutting is less than 0.2mm, and the sidewall of the graphite electrode will get better surface quality.

The dust generated by CNC machining of relatively large graphite electrodes can invade the machine. This requires corresponding machine tools, guide screws for processing graphite dust, and a good sealing machine because graphite is toxic.
